The Ultimate Styling Guide for Your Session

Find outfit inspiration and styling advice to make your photo session unforgettable!

Let's mix it up!

Hear me out...

I don't expect all of my clients to be styled the same- that is the beauty of your story. So you may see boho country for one session but city chic in another. You definitely don’t need to change what you’re into in this season of life to become or remain a client over here. Whatever you’re going for, I’m here to help bring it to life. Your outfit and color palette brings life and story to your images. The layering of textures and pieces can create effortless movement and depth to your photos. We can coordinate without being matchy-matchy, and most importantly be comfortable! We want to avoid being stiff or unnatural to create cinematic, real life frames of life. Utilizing your style guide is recommended to get those storytelling photos you've been pinning on Pinterest.
  • Start by picking a color scheme. Even if it is neutral! The days of everyone wearing the same exact color are no longer.
  • Bring out the personality of those in the group by incorporating various textures and accessories. Layers and detail create depth and dimension.
  • Try to incorporate bold patterns in one or two people's outfits, then use that as inspiration for a color palette to build everyone else's outfit around.
  • Choose outfits that allow for movement and comfortability because we won't be standing still!
  • Ask for suggestions! Styling assistance is a part of every session along with your style guide.
  • Even with a budget, you can plan a fun date night to shop and get excited about your session even if its from your living room online.
  • Ask me about dress rentals or utilizing my client closet.

Styling Essential Do's and Don'ts

  • We want to coordinate rather than be "Matchy-Matchy" for your portrait session.
  • Neon colors can cast strange hues in photos.
  • Large logos, characters, and busy patterns can create distractions in your portraits.
  • Don't wait until the day before the session to try on or steam your outfits. You want plenty of time to come up with an alternative option should something go wrong or not fit for a member in the group.
  • Don't forget to talk to the kiddos about the upcoming session. Try chatting about an incentive for the kids to earn after the shoot, like going out for ice cream. Then as we shoot, we can remind them of where they are going once we are through!
  • Don't wear colors that will blend into the scenery. Keep the season and the location we are shooting in mind, and choose colors that will pop or accentuate where we will be.

"Shayna made me feel absolutely amazing on my wedding day. "

-  THE SISK’S

"She was amazing at answering any questions and staying in touch with me. She helped us between taking things from one suite to the next + keeping me out of sight. My husband is not a huge picture guy but he was comfortable in front of her. Our wedding day was a dark + rainy day but she helped me feel comfortable with it. With that, we have absolutely stunning pictures from our wedding day. We will absolutely use Shayna again for any future photos."

"Our experience with Shayna could not have been any better!"

- THE KIRBY’S

"She made my daughter feel so special and really talked her through the whole senior session experience. She was a bit nervous at the outset because she had no idea what to expect. Within a couple of minutes into the session, she was completely at ease and grinning from ear to ear. The photographs were absolutely gorgeous! I highly recommend her to anyone for any experience."

"Shayna is absolutely amazing to work with"

- JENNA L.

"I am obsessed with every session we have done with her! She has done our maternity, newborn and now 1st birthday photos. I’m in love with her editing style and she has incredible styling ideas for outfits. She is easy to communicate with and always makes each session an enjoyable experience."
